Vesuvius before eruption of 79
19th-century illustration, "Vesuvius before the Eruption of 79 A.D." Mt. Vesuvius in what is now Italy erupted spectacularly in A.D. 79, covering the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash. The preserved remains of the Roman cities were discovered and excavated starting in the 18th century.
