John Andre captured by New York militiamen
Currier & Ives print by John Paulding depicting the capture of British major John Andre by John Paulding, David Williams and Isaac Van Wart, at Tarrytown, N.Y., on September 23, 1780. The New York militiamen are shown examining papers concerning the capture of West Point which Andre had hidden in his boot. Andre was hanged for his role in Benedict Arnold's plot to surrender the camp at West Point, New York, to the British.
