The Misses Cooke's school room, Freedman's Bureau, Richmond, Va. / from a sketch by James. E. Taylor, published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in 1866. The Freedman's Bureau, an agency of the War Department, provided classes and other activities to assist freed slaves and refugees.
