Jan Hus before the Council of Constance
19th-century illustration, "Huss before the Council," after a painting by K.F.Lessing. Bohemian theologian Jan Hus was called before the Council of Constance in 1414 because of his criticism of Catholicism; the Council sentenced him to die for his heresy. He was executed the following year.
